Dreamy Eyes (Mat Biec) is a Vietnamese film directed by Victor Vu, adapted from the novel of the same name by renowned author Nguyen Nhat Anh. It was released on December 20, 2019.
Mat Biec centers on Ngan’s unrequited love for Ha Lan, a girl with mesmerizing eyes and a strong-willed nature. Their relationship unfolds across different stages and starting with innocent childhood affection, evolving into a tender student romance, and eventually turning into a sorrowful yet hopeful pursuit of a love that always seems just out of reach. The story takes an even more heartbreaking turn when Tra Long, Ha Lan’s daughter, grows up and begins to develop a love for Ngan, echoing the past in a bittersweet way.
The film revolves around the life of Ngan – a gentle, introverted boy, carrying a silent love for his childhood friend named Ha Lan. From the days when they were two children playing under the trees of their hometown Do Do, to when they grew up in the bustling city, Ngan’s feelings for Ha Lan remained intact and loyal as in the beginning. However, Ha Lan – the girl with captivating blue eyes – was drawn into the bustling life of the city, gradually moving away from the image of her hometown and Ngan’s sincere love.
Movie Summary: A Sad Song of Unrequited Love
The story became more tragic when Tra Long – Ha Lan’s daughter – grew up and began to have feelings for Ngan. Tra Long’s image carried the appearance of her mother in the past, making Ngan’s feelings even more complicated and painful. In the end, although always present beside the person he loved, Ngan was still just a “shadow”, a person behind Ha Lan’s unfinished dreams.
The special feature of Mat Biec lies not only in the touching plot but also in the way director Victor Vu depicts the beauty of the Vietnamese countryside through poetic footage and nostalgic colors. The music in the film, especially the song “Co chang trai viet len cay”, also contributes to creating a quiet, sad love song, full of narrative, making viewers feel moved. As soon as I heard that the film was being adapted, I immediately thought of this song. It couldn’t be more suitable for Nguyen Nhat Anh’s work.
Mat Biec is a sad song of unrequited love, of the beautiful but unfinished things of youth. However, in that sadness there is still something gentle and peaceful – like the late afternoon sunlight shining through the trees of Do Do village, gentle but profound, so that when leaving the theater, people still carry with them an unnamed feeling.

Theme Song: The Train – Christopher Wong
“The piano sounds slowly, still the cheerful melodies from The School, from the extremely pure notes of youth, from the quintessence of life, from the rays of love, but when the train moves away, Ngan slowly steps onto the train, Ngan frees himself from the village of Do Do, and from there, the pure sounds of youth, the passionate sounds of love, the beautiful memories, everything has disappeared, and all is only in memory.
This film really gave me moments of true life, let me know how to feel life, and moreover, that is what fueled my intense love for the girl with blue eyes!”
